Savoring Success: BEFH Catalysts for Growth and Recognition for Smokin’ H’s

Smokin’ H’s Meats, a flourishing black-owned barbecue catering service, is the brainchild of Harrison B. Mitchell. Known for its mouth-watering dinners at the Manhattan Brewing Company and the Topeka Breadbasket Farmer’s Market, Smokin’ H’s has become a staple for BBQ lovers. Harrison's pride in his business extends beyond these local venues to the shelves of Hy-Vee, where his signature BBQ sauce and brisket rub have found a home.

Being able to support and create income for Smokin’ H’s and my family for the last five years and creating my sauces and rubs being sold in a National Grocery Store like Hy-Vee.
— Harrison B. Mitchell, Founder of Smokin H's Meats

Smokin’ H’s Meats received the Circle of Community Black Business Grant and gave further insight into how the Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills and the grant have impacted his business.

What does being a black entrepreneur in the Flint Hills mean to you?

“It shows that being black and an entrepreneur is possible in any city or state if we stick together. I’m blessed to be a part of the black entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills. They have shown me nothing but love.”

Since receiving the Circle of Community Grant, how have the grant funds assisted you in your business growth?

“The grant money was used for a food business license. I enrolled in an eight-week boot camp business class and the necessary laptop. This will help my business grow.”

How have the Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills (BEFH) supported you in your entrepreneurial journey?

“It has been beneficial to talk to honest people who put their heart into what they are doing. BEFH is constantly helping others with their entrepreneurial businesses with the necessary information and directing you to the services you need to grow your business. Since they are entrepreneurs, they know exactly what you're going through and make the process as easy as possible.”

Describe the importance of having a black business community like BEFH

“It creates growth. BEFH lets visitors know they are welcome and can have a successful business here.”

Describe a BEFH event that has helped you in your business

“Of course, the black business Gala and award event. This is where I received my first-ever grant for smoking H's Meats. There were great national speakers, singers, local performers, and local vendors in Manhattan, Kansas, and the surrounding areas.”

Has BEFH referred business to you this year?

“Yes, with the help of their marketing.”
