Honoring Legacy, Investing in the Future: 2025 Sankofa BEFH & BSU Scholarship Recipients
"Wealth, if you use it, comes to an end; learning, if you use it, increases."
– Swahili Proverb
At Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills (BEFH), we believe that education is the foundation for building generational wealth and leadership. However, financial barriers often force talented students to put their dreams on hold. That’s why we created the Sankofa BEFH & BSU Scholarship—a commitment to empowering students within the award-winning Black Student Union (BSU) at Kansas State University and ensuring they have the support they need to succeed.
Left to Right: MyiAngel Harbin, London Monroe, Nakiya Woodley and SaDerra Gill.
Why Sankofa?
Sankofa, an Akan word from Ghana, means "to go back and get it." It is a powerful reminder that in order to move forward, we must honor and learn from the past. This philosophy is deeply embedded in the mission of BEFH, as we work to create a more equitable future for students and entrepreneurs.
The Sankofa BEFH & BSU Scholarship is more than just financial aid—it’s an investment in the future leaders, innovators, and changemakers who will uplift their communities for generations to come.
Through the generosity of our donors and supporters, this year, four exceptional students will receive $1,000 scholarships to continue their educational journeys at Kansas State University.
Meet the 2025 Scholarship Recipients
Recipients
MyiAngel Harbin – Violin Performance Major
"Classical music is often reserved for wealthy communities, but I want to change that. I want kids like me to have the chance to explore music beyond what’s taught in school. This scholarship allows me to focus on school and teaching instead of working a job just to survive. It’s helping me build a future where music education is accessible to all."
Nakiya Woodley – Mechanical Engineering Technology Major & Leadership Studies Minor
"As a woman in STEM, I know what it means to be the only Black person in the room. I’ve faced racial and gender-based challenges, but I refuse to let them stop me. This scholarship is a stepping stone toward my goal of creating more opportunities for Black engineers and ensuring that STEM is a space where we belong."
London Monroe – Athletic Training Major, Pre-Occupational Therapy Track
"My journey has taught me the power of using my voice—not just for myself, but for others. As a future healthcare professional, I plan to advocate for my patients, helping them regain their independence and dignity. This scholarship lifts a financial burden, allowing me to focus on becoming the best provider I can be."
SaDerra Gill – Integrative Human Sciences Major, Pre-Physician Assistant Track
"Being a first-generation college student means I’m not just earning a degree—I’m breaking cycles. Only 4.7% of physicians in the U.S. are Black, and I intend to be one of them. This scholarship isn’t just financial aid; it’s a belief in my dreams, and I’m determined to make them a reality."
